CACTUS AND SUCCULENT CARE:

Cactus and Succulents come in thousands of sizes, shapes, colors and textures, and encompass a number of plant families.  While classified Cactus are their own family, made up of about 125 genera and nearly 2,000 known species, succulent species can be found in a number of different plant families, including Cactus, Crassula, Euphorbia and Dracaena.
While Cactus are native to the Americas, from Patagonia to western Canada, Succulents can be found on every continent except Antarctica.

Cactus and Succulents both have adapted ways to preserve, store and use water.  A succulent is defined by "a plant with thick, fleshy and swollen stems and/or leaves, adapted to dry environments."  All succulents have the ability to take in and store water, since they are from areas of the world that rainfall is scarce.  

When we think about Cactus and succulents, we think that they do not need to be watered often.  In some ways, this is true, but in some others, it is the opposite.  The key to successful Cactus and Succulent ownership is small amounts of water more frequently.  There are many factors that prove to this.  Cactus and succulents are designed to take in small amounts of water on a somewhat regular basis.  The shape of their structure, shallow roots and even the environment they natively came from allow for this.  In hot, dry conditions of the desert, the night time temps drop significantly, resulting in condensation and dew.  That small amount of water will naturally slide down the sides of a Cactus, or trickle down through the rosettes of an Echeveria or Aloe, providing a small pool of water at the base of the plant.  The shallow root structure is at or just below the surface of the soil, easily able to reach and drink up this small amount of water. 
The ridges of a Cactus, or the leaves of a succulent (among other parts of succulents) take this water, and store it, drinking small amounts as the plant needs it. 

Go too long in between watering, and the plant has exhausted all of it's resources, causing it to shrivel up and die.  On the opposite end of this, as many people think, watering more heavily, but only every 2-3 weeks, provides the Cactus or succulent with too much water, all at once.  They don't know when to stop drinking, so they will take up all the water, and turn to mush: basically exploding from the water.
Avoid both of these things by providing your Cactus or succulent with small amounts of water more frequently.  How you do this is going to be trial and error, and everyone has a different approach.  Some spray their Cactus with water each day, lightly misting it so as to produce a "condensation" effect.  Some water directly in to the soil, in small amounts twice a week.  Both can work.
We find that a decent rule of thumb is to provide a 4" pot, for example, with 1 tablespoon of water, two or three times a week.  That is not a lot of water, and it will not cause the plant to explode, but will provide enough sustenance  to prevent wrinkling or browning.
In the Winter months, you will most likely need to reduce this watering by at least 50%, as they go dormant.

Cactus and succulents generally have a very short growing season and a much longer dormant season. Because of this, fertilization should only occur in the short growing months of the Summer.  You can use a general purpose fertilizer, or one designed specifically for Cactus, but either should only be used in June, July and August. 

A loose, fast draining soil or soilless mix is ideal.  A peat based mixture with lots of perlite, vermiculite or sand will do the trick.  There are a number of pre-packaged Cactus and Succulent mixes on the market, but some are better than others.  We use and recommend Premier or Coast of Maine.  Both of these are great, but we still find that adding perlite or vermiculite to a commercial pre-mixed Cactus soil is good practice to keep it airy and fast draining. .

Because most Cactus and succulents do not have a significant root system, there is very little need to repot them, maybe every 2-3 years.  When you do choose to repot, only go up 1 size.
Many people think that their succulent needs to be repotted because it is growing tall, in a strange fashion.  Their root system is still shallow, but they are "stretching" because they are not receiving enough light.  Try moving your plant to a new location with better, more even sun.

Most Cactus do very well in full sun environments, like the desert, where they are hit by the strong sun all day.  Their spines, and even hairs, protect them from not only herbivores but also the harsh sun rays.  They do best in lots of bright light.  Many succulents such as Crown of Thorns, Euphorbias, Aloes and Haworthias can also tolerate full, all day sun, while others, such as Echeveria and many other types of Crassula prefer well lit, indirect sun.  Morning sunlight is best for these soft tissue succulents so that they can absorb the warm morning rays without risking sunburn in the afternoon.

Most Cactus and succulents are generally free of pests, however, from time to time, we will find that Scale will effect them, along with Mealy Bugs on the leafier varieties of succulents.  It is always best practice to isolate any new plants you bring in to your home for a few weeks to watch for little pests.  If you were to find any, see our At Home Pest Recipes here.

Most Cactus and succulents are propagated from cuttings, either of the stem or leaves.  These cuttings should be allowed to "scar over" for a week or so before being placed on soil.  Watering a cutting is tricky, but we find that spraying them lightly a few times a week is best, to give water to the tiny roots, without running the risk of the soil holding too much water and the young cuttings rotting.  Growing from seed is also an option, but is incredibly slow and can prove to be difficult for a beginner.

App/Vacuum Loses maps after 3 months of use.
I'm hoping someone from Eufy is monitoring these reviews. We love...loved our Eufy. It works great. The mapping and map editing is so nice to be able to program the vacuum to clean different rooms each day. We love the self cleaning system that empties the Eufy after each use. We owned a Roomba a few years ago with the self empty option and it never worked. We had it replaced by Roomba twice and it still never worked. This one works exceptionally well. BUT here we are 3 months later and the app is losing the map. nearly every day, the system has to re-map our entire space. Yesterday, it had no map and went down the stairs. The unit is supposed to have a sensor to prevent it from going where there are drop offs but apparently this issue with the mapping is also showing up in the unit being unable to stay in the cleaning area. I'm hoping that someone from Eufy will reach out to help. Thanks,

Quiet, that's about the only good quality
UPDATE: Moving to 5 stars! Quickly after my 2 star review (below) the seller reached out and askked to exchange the defective product for an upgraded model at no cost to me. They were attentive and quick in responding, and I received a replacement version that also included the mopping functionality (The first didn't have this), and it works as expected. Customer service was too notch. I wouldn't hesitate to buy again. This is a lot quieter than my original Roomba, that is still running strong...but I wanted a 2nd robot vac so I could run one on the main floor and 2nd floor of my home. This one doesn't fit the bill, and I will be returning. I ran it while I was at home, and it stopped 4 times, telling me I needed to clean the brush. There was absolutely nothing bound on the brush any of the times. But had I not been home, it wouldn't have finished cleaning because it stops completely when it thinks there is hair. Then, another time, it just stopped running. It didn't say anything, so I don't know why it stopped. I assume it thought it was done, but the whole level of my home wasn't finished. This was all in just the one time I attempted to run it for 1 cycle. When I pushed the start button again, it said something to the effect of starting cleaning, so that's what makes me assume the last cycle was over. It does clean well, and is very quiet; however, it just stops for no reason far too often. I want it to run while I'm at the office, which obviously won't work if I have to be here babysitting it for the imaginary dirt on the brush. This will unfortunately be getting returned. I think I'll stick to the Roomba brand, as I have far less issues with my 10+ year old vac than this new one with all the nice features.

Decent robot vacuum, but struggles with dog hair
The setup was straightforward and the self-empty station is a nice feature. It navigates the house fairly well and does a decent job picking up everyday dust and debris on hard floors. Where it struggles is with dog hair. With a shedding dog in the house, I noticed it tends to leave behind quite a bit of hair, especially along edges and in areas where it tends to accumulate. It works better for lighter debris but doesn’t seem powerful enough to keep up with heavier pet hair. Very Disappointed with this Vacuum
After having a Shark Robot Vacuum for many years, my husband decided to upgrade to newer technology (easier boundary settings, better mapping etc) On a good note, when this thing works - it works great. One of my biggest complaints with the Shark was I had to put physical boundary strips at the top of the stairs etc. This Eufy is very easy to set "no go zones" on the app, works famously in that aspect. This vac also seems to "work" in a more organized manner. I can see on the app exactly what was cleaned after every scheduled cleaning etc. The Shark would just buzz around the house all willy nilly, but this Eufy seems to be very organized in the cleaning, not missing anywhere. Now for the most aggravating part. I have my Eufy scheduled to clean every night @ 1:00 am, while we are sleeping. Most nights @ 1:15 am I get a notification on my phone "Roller Brush Stuck". Well obviously I don't see the notification until morning. I go "find" Eufy (which is easy with the app - shows you right where she is - another nice thing compared to the Shark) Pull the Roller Brush, which mind you, nothing is wrong with, it is not stuck, there is nothing wrapped around it etc. Put it back in & restart. This has done this since day one, brand new out of the box. After doing some scouring of the Internet, I see that this is a big complaint with many other owners of this model. From what I gather, Eufy is aware of this and it is a known problem. I called Eufy Customer Care after about using this for one week. The phone call lasted over 45 minutes (part of my life that I will never get back!) Now mind you, the representative was very helpful & thorough. We walked through a couple procedures, (The Rep had me pull the roller brush etc & report to her what I was "seeing") Which again, I had performed everything the Rep had me do religiously for the past week, but No, she like wouldn't take my word for it, I had to do all this again while on the phone with her - - almost like she didn't believe me at first. Next, the Rep offered to send me a "newer design roller brush" Ok, cool, if it solves the problem let's do it - I just wanted to get off the phone & on with my day. Oh wait, there are no new design roller brushes in stock. Now I'm told to send just the robot back (not the dock) I told the Rep to send me a call tag, as I wasn't going to pay shipping on a "brand new used one week" item. Oh wait, now she has located the replacement roller brushes. So here we are back to the original solution, she will send me a replacement roller brush. Took my name, my address, phone number, name of first & last born children etc. Just a long drawn out process to send me the "fix" for their known manufacture problem. So to make my long story even longer, here I sit a month and a 1/2 later without ever receiving the replacement brush and an unreliable product who doesn't complete her "mission" most nights. I wish this vacuum was still within the 30 day Amazon return period, because I would have sent it back after experiencing this defect. However my husband had bought this for me for Christmas (before the date that Amazon offers their extended holiday returns window) I didn't even unbox this vacuum before the 30 days were up. The App with the mapping & the expansive scheduling options is great compared to the Shark, but I bought the Eufy to vacuum, which she fails @ nightly.

Great upgrade from my old robot

I had a different robot vacuum for a little over four years, and it finally started giving out, so I decided to try this one. It’s definitely an upgrade. The first thing I noticed is that it runs much quieter than my old one, which I really appreciate. The self-emptying feature is super convenient as I don’t have to dump the container every single day like I used to. It mapped my home surprisingly fast. It moved through each room for a minute or two and somehow had the whole layout figured out almost immediately. I did adjust the room boundaries a bit, but nothing complicated. Cleaning performance has been solid. I usually run it on the highest suction because I have a cat and a couple of carpeted rooms, and it handles the hair pretty well. For hardwood, there are lower modes too. It also has a mopping feature, but I don’t use it—I prefer my regular steam mop for that. Setup was easy, and connecting it to the app took just a moment. And it charges quickly too.
